本书是依据《高等学校英语专业基础阶段英语教学大纲》、《高校英语专业四级考试大纲》和《高等学校英语专业高年级英语教学大纲》、《高校英语专业八级考试大纲》的精神，仿照“高校英语专业四级考试”和“高校英语专业八级考试”的听力新闻题型编写而成。
    本书中的新闻都选自英国广播公司（BBC）和美国公共广播电台（NPR）的最新新闻，前半部分为专业四级的新闻听力模拟题，后半部分为专业八级的新闻听力模拟题。每部分都将新闻加以分类，如政治、经济和科技新闻等。所有试题都附有答案，并配备有生词注释和相应的试题分析。书后有应试技巧分析。
    高校英语专业四级考试听力理解测试共有25分钟，包括陈述（Statement）、对话（Short dialogue）和新闻报道（News Broadcast）三部分。其中新闻部分包括五篇新闻，每篇新闻后设有两道听力题，共十题。题目在录音中读出，不在试卷上列出。每道题后有20秒的答题时间。
    高校英语专业八级考试听力理解测试共有45分钟，包括交谈（Talk）、谈话（Conversation）和新闻报道（News Broadcast）三部分。其中新闻部分包括两篇新闻，第一篇新闻较短，后设有两道听力题，有30秒的答题时间；第二篇新闻较长，后设有三道听力题，有45秒的答题时间。题目在试卷上列出，而不在录音中读出。
    本书将新闻按照考试要求分组设置，每一组相当于一份试题。读者可以以组为单元进行练习，每做完一组练习，可以参考答案，参照翻译掌握生词。
    新闻听力在英语专业考试中也占有相当的比重，听英语新闻是提高英语听力的一个好方法，不仅可以了解新闻时事，还可以学到一些富有时代气息的新词汇。本书不仅可供英语专业的大学生在准备英语专业四、八级考试时进行自测，也可供理工科大学高年级学生、研究生及社会上中、高级英语培训学校参考之用。
