本套教材是为北京市海淀区以及其它经济与教育发达地区的同学们小学学习英语而编写的，每学期一册，中小学相衔接。教材的设计为话题-功能-结构-任务相结合，同学们可以在学习过程中逐步获得多元智能的发展。
    本书由课程教材研究所英语课程教材研究开发中心、北京市海淀区教师进修学校和加拿大Lingo Media 国际集团联合编写。
    英语是学习文化科学知识、获取世界各方面信息并进行国际交往的重要工具。学习和掌握英语，是21世纪对我们大家提出的基本要求。
    大家使用本套教材学习英语将会达到以下目标：
    1.培养学习兴趣
    情感因素对学习的成败至关重要。因此，本教材将会使同学们在开始就体会到学习的乐趣。
    2.培养文化意识
    学习外语的目的不仅在于了解外国，也要让外国了解我们中国，同学们应当在学习过程中逐步树立世界意识。本套教材从一开始即注重双向式交流，既介绍英语国家的文化，也介绍中国文化和其他文化，努力实现跨文化交际。
    3.增长各学科能力
    学习英语不仅是为了人际之间的交往，也是为了更广泛地获取信息，学习其他学科知识。在对国内外同年龄段的各学科课程进行调研的基础上，我们力图在教材的各学段中适当引入其它学科内容，如计算机、自然、数学等。
    4.鼓励个性发展
    考虑到学校差异、教师差异和学生个人差异，本套教材在教学内容上具有一定的灵活度和层次性。同学们可以根据自己的性格特点和学习方式，在老师的指导下把握学习内容和进度。在评价方面，本教材强调"学会学习"，注意形成性评价与终结性评价并用，注重能力的发展而不仅仅是知识的记忆。
